Matthew 13:30-32 (ESV) .”’”
The Mustard Seed and the Leaven
31 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
Mark 4:30-32 (ESV) The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
Luke 13:18-19 (ESV) The Mustard Seed and the Leaven
18 He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.”
When we are looking to scripture to gain vision into life through Biblical illustrations we must learn of the mustard seed. Life must be understood as a growth process , the mustard seed is a lesson presented in three of the gospels so it should get our attention. So the most obvious lesson is the fact that a small seed grows into a tree . We in the garden business are quit familiar with seed and are aware how every seed is different. We observe that some seed is quite large like corn or bean seed. While other seed is quite small like alfalfa or cabbage seed. The lesson to us gardeners is to observe the growth process. The growth process is dependent on a natural process that God in Heaven is chief administrator. He created the soil , and put the seed in it.with its minerals and other growth promoting parts like enzymes and earth worms. He formed the seed to grow into plants to carry out the reproduction process, this then effects creation near the plant which sometimes provides food for the gardener and some animals near by. Those who remain ignorant of plant process will have a hard time enjoying the many things plants have to offer their custodian’s.
